Interview: MATTHEW CUTTER (Joseph Airport)

Matthew Cutter is the lead singer of indie rock group Joseph Airport. They released their debut album, Stronger And Better, in 2014, followed by the Zombus Walrie EP earlier this year, and with news of a sophomore effort, entitled Recording Lake Superior, due early next year, there's a lot to be excited about.

When did Joseph Airport start making music?
In 2013 we did three or four impromptu jam sessions in Ben Penry's basement. No specific band or line-up, just whoever was there. Around the same time, Jereme and I started doing postal collaborations; he sent instrumentals and I added lyrics and melodies. Those things eventually merged into Joseph Airport.

You've written some rather interesting lyrics for Joseph Airport. What's your writing process?
Finding jarring yet apt connections between ideas.

Very well put. You certainly have quite a way with words.
Thank you.

Changing gears for a bit, your first album, Stronger And Better, was released through Rockathon Records, the online Guided By Voices/Circus Devils/Lexo And The Leapers/etc. store. How did that come about?

Robert Pollard edited and sequenced the record; at some point in the process he suggested we put it on Rockathon. We were floored. We still paid for it! But it's a huge honor to be on Rockathon. We're incredibly lucky to have Bob pulling for us.

You recently announced a second album, entitled Recording Lake Superior, due out early next year. How does it compare to the band's past efforts?

It's a big leap forward for the band. We've got some longer songs, and stuff that's a little more complex lyrically and musically. We also brought in drummer Jason Short and bassist Blake Stenning for the recordings. They are talented cats; they've taken us up a notch.

That sounds amazing. I am truly psyched for this.

Thanks. We are too!

But it seems as though fans won't be stuck waiting in silence. In the announcement post, a "mystery EP" was alluded to. Can you give any information on what that may contain?

10 songs. It's either a meta-commentary in the form of a time-travel narrative, or it's a concept album about D.B. Cooper. We're not quite decided yet.

Can't wait to find out which one you go with. Anyway, reports have stated that Joseph Airport is an incredible live act. Can you describe what an average Joseph Airport show looks like?

Live shows ... like our albums on steroids, as I think Jereme once said. The goal is to put on an entertaining show, however much showmanship that takes. We're about to practice in a few weeks, so the excitement is building.

Nice! When you're not being the pilot of Joseph Airport, what do you enjoy doing?

Either writing or watching horror movies. You like horror movies?

Personally, I'm not big on them, but I get the appeal.

What do you dig cinema-wise?

I'm not sure. I'm trying to remember the last movie I watched. (thinks for a bit) I do not remember the last movie I watched.

You need to catch up on your film watching, Ben. There's a whole world in there.

I really do need to get caught up. What am I missing out on?

You should probably just watch Queen Rock Montreal. Best of all possible worlds.

Not huge on Queen, but I might check it out if I have any free time (which I probably do). Well, that was fun. Any closing statements?

I hope your readers check out the record, and I wish you a Happy Thanksgiving.

And a happy Thanksgiving to you as well. Let it croost.
Yes!
